Insight Into Sri Lanka -11 Days Private Tour

Insight into Sri Lanka (11 days tour) is a relaxing trip to Sri Lanka with all major tourist places such as historical monuments in the cultural triangle, hill country, southern Sri Lanka wildlife parks, west coast beaches, and many many more. On this trip we’ve taken Sri Lanka, boiled it like the tea leaves the country is famous for and strained out the most delicious stuff. Wandering past barracuda at the Negombo Fish Market, searching for leopards and elephants in Yala, munching a spicy curry in Ella and getting horizontal on the beach in Unawatuna, this 11-day tour is a Sri Lanka snapshot.

Start- Negombo, Sri Lanka

Finish- Colombo, Sri Lanka

Ages- Min 18

Group- Size Min 1

Trip Type- Private

Why you'll love this trip?

  • The private and relaxing tour happens at your own pace.
  • Wander through the thousands of years of old ancient monuments in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle.
  • Cruise around Yala National in a 4WD on a wildlife safari, searching for elephants, bears and leopards, then relax lakeside at tranquil Tissa.
  • Trekking through the mountains, tea plantation and patches of forests in the mountain resort of Ella.
  • Guided walking tour through the beautiful village of Tissamaharama.
  • Shark, squid, barracuda and hundreds of things with fins that nobody knows the name of – visit the sensational Negombo Fish Market.
  • Learn the benefits of washing down a spicy curry with piping-hot Ceylon tea during lunch in a lush mountain village near Ella.
  • Leave the imprint of your face on the train window as you stare out wide-eyed from Kandy to Ella – it’s basically a 6-hour movie of amazing scenery.
  • Two days (and nights) on Unawatuna's golden, palm-lined beaches can cure almost all of life’s problems, including any residual tightness in your photo-taking finger.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Can you feel that tingling in your fingers? That my friend is power! This trip puts it in your hands – there are few inclusions, so you’ll have plenty of freedom to decide what you want to do.
  • At 6 hours, the train ride from Kandy to Ella is the longest travel day. But the only reason you’ll want to get off this train is to charge your camera after what is basically a long, natural photoshoot.
  • The road from Ella to Tissa Lake winds down mountains to the coast, which means it can be frustratingly slow. It also means that you’ll get to see the awesome scenery from literally every angle.
  • The entire trip is private (transfers and sightseeing), and only you and your associates take part in the trip.
  • This 11 days trip packs a lot in. It’s one of the most popular Sri Lanka tours, we run in our Original style, perfect for those, who look for a one-week trip and a desire to do the most with it. If you are after a more leisurely trip in Sri Lanka or a shorter trip please check our other tour itineraries.
  • Sri Lanka can get extremely hot in the summer. While we aim to do our walking tours, city tours early in the morning or afternoon, when it’s cooler, remember to keep water on you and to bring a hat, sunscreen, a long-sleeved shirt, and anything else that will protect you from the sun.
  • Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. We visit a number of temples on this trip and to enter them you must have clothes that cover to wrists and below the knee. Sometimes you have to remove the head covers and shoes upon entering the temple. Please click here to know more about the rules and regulations pertaining to Sri Lanka temple visits.

Special Information

Tourism in Sri Lanka is booming, and with it has come a huge increase in visitors to Yala National Park. Overtourism and lack of sustainable management practices have become a major concern for us in continuing to visit Yala. In order to reduce our impact on wildlife and the environment, we are trialling visiting a less touristed section of Yala, known as Block 5. Should we determine that high tourist numbers at Block 5 also make it difficult to continue visiting responsibly we will change our itinerary to visit Udawalawe National Park, where wild elephants, wild buffalo, sambar deer and leopards also reside.

From September through October when Yala National Park has closed annually for infrastructure development and rejuvenation we go on a jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park. Udawalawe is home to wild elephants, wild buffalo, sambar deer and leopards.

  1. Gael:

The tour was really incredible, and the guide was wonderful as well. Bring a hat and sunscreen since some of the areas you visit can get quite hot during the midday heat. Our tour guide was kind, spoke excellent English, and was able to address all of our concerns. Highly recomend!

  2. Robert:

Americans from Chicago are far from Sri Lanka, thus there is less marketing there. The island resembles Hawaii from forty years ago, but with elephants. Really, the geography, people, and food impressed me. Visit Sri Lanka while on vacation, and go out into the countryside and plantations of tea. My expectations as a frequent traveller were more than met.

  3. Gillard:

On this Sri Lanka 11 days tour, my two companions and I had the best time ever! Beautiful temples, amazing animals, delectable cuisine, lovely surroundings, kind people, fantastic, spotless beaches, and a tour/sampling at a tea centre! Additionally, our amazing tour guide Silva made the vacation special for us. He was extremely knowledgeable, considerate, and humorous. Silva, thank you so much for a wonderful day and for showing us about Sri Lanka!

  4. Dyaraja mathu:

My 2 girlfriends and I had such an amazing time on this tour! Beautiful temples, fascinating wildlife, delicious food, gorgeous scenery, friendly people, superb, clean beaches, and a tour/sampling at a tea centre! Plus our wonderful guide Silva made the trip memorable for us – he was so knowledgeable, kind, and funny – if you get him for your tour, you will be lucky! Thank you so much, Silva, for a fantastic day and for showing us Sri Lanka! 🙂 🙂

  5. Nadia Alameen:

I had a great trip to a large number of tourist places in Sri Lanka with essential tour. One of the best trips I have ever had.

  6. Melina haufmann:

What an excellent Sri Lanka 11 days it was!! From being picked up exactly on time to being dropped off back at the airport we had one of the most amazing trips. Our tour guide, Silva, was so very matured and experienced guy, he was enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. The drove very carefully and we felt very safe on Sri Lana roads with him. At one of our stops it was raining, so the itinerary was swapped so that we did not have to get wet. This was very thoughtful and it worked out well. We got to see everything AND stay dry:- The sights we saw were breath-taking. For example, when you walk up the stairs to Sigiriya and turn around and see the view … it is amazing. Ending the trip with relaxing on the beach is such a great idea. An ice cold local cocktail is exactly what we felt like after the heat of the tour. We would DEFINITELY recommend this to anyone who wants to see the hot spots of Sri Lanka and learn about their traditions. The constant supply of water, and bracelet souvenir were an excellent touch. Thank you for an awesome experience.

  7. Adeel khan:

Sri Lanka for Americans from Chicago is distant so we receive limited marketing. The island is like Hawaii 40 years ago and with elephants. I was sincerely amazed at the geography, people and food. Engage Sri Lanka on Holiday and get out into the rural areas and tea plantations. As an avid traveler my expectations were more than fulfilled.

  8. Andrew Miliband:

I cannot recommend Seerendipity’s 11 days trip (essential Sri Lanka) high enough from the moment I logged on to their website until the last day of our trip. Just do it – you won’t be disappointed.

  9. Amir Mohammad:

Excellent trip and highly valuable trip

  10. Milan Ponzo:

Instead of the lazy holiday, book and sit in a Hotel for a week or more, get out and see the whole Country, and get 1o1 interaction with the People, the Culture, and most importantly the Food.

  11. Malan sensaka chong:

It was a good trip amazing driver/guide. Gives you an incite to life of an ordinary person. Loved the tea plantations and the walk through and the villages. Scenic mountian. Safari to see the elephants.

  12. Leonard allan wood:

Essential Sri Lanka is a great way to get to know this beautiful country and its friendly people. It packs in touring, cycling, trekking, across cities, villages, hill country and beaches.

  13. Gilian yeager:

Tour was really amazing and the guide was also really nice. Because of the mid-day sun, some places that you visit can be really hot so bring your hat and sunscreen Our guide was friendly, good english and was able to answer all our questions. I recommend

  14. Gheen salem:

An excellent trip that gives a real “feel” of Sri Lanka through a range of activities and attractions. The knowledge, organisation and enthusiasm of our guide, Kelum, contributed to this experience. Everything is private with a dedicated driver/guide and comfortable vehicle.

  15. Menat Zingel:

This tour was amazing!! I’d recommend wearing comfortable shoes, especially on day 2 because you will be climbing Sigiriya and Dambulla rocks. Our tour driver/guide, Gihan, was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!. He was very funny, personable, knowledgeable, and really showed us a great time, He is a perfect guy for a personal tour like this. We were clean water throughout the day, our car was clean and plenty of air-conditioning. The trip is very comfortable and you can even do some changes to the itinerary if you wish. Very luxury tour and the travellers get plenty of time relaxing. Every day we plunged into the swimming pool before having our delicious dinner. You will also get plenty of opportunities for shopping and they take you to shops with authentic Sri Lanka products such as silk, masks, carving etc. Highly recommended trip.

  16. Silvia:

It was a good trip amazing tour guide. Loved the tea plantations and the walk through and the villages. Scenic train ride. Safari to see the elephants.

  17. peterson:

What a fantastic tour!!!!!!! Malan is hands down my favourite tour guide and this is our first organized trip in Sri Lanka! This trip is so full on and submerges you into Sri Lanka and the beauty of the country combining the new western style cities with the agriculture and tea plantations. I couldn’t recommend this trip more!!! Just remember to take sun cream and mosquito repellent.. like all trips! Without malan this trip would not have taken my breath away as much as it did and I can safely say We will do the trip again! So thank you and your fabulous organization and ensuring we had everything we needed including our smiles and expensive shampoos!!..

  22. Jihan pereira:

We really enjoyed this tour, and it was our first trip after months-long hibernation! Felt safe along the way with adequate safety protocols introduced by hotels, tourist attractions, shops etc.

I think seeing all of the sites would have been wonderful, but what truly made our trip was our amazing guide, Malan! he was so incredibly friendly, informed on all the history/facts that you want to know, and gave us a plethora of tips on where the locals go too. We took his advice throughout the trip and had a great time! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to get their bearings of Sri Lanka and learn a little something along the way. Thanks for making our trip so special, Malan 🙂

  23. Nutan patel:

My husband and I had a Blast! Our Sri Lanka trip was amazing start to finish. We were picked up from the airport on our arrival By Chammy (our driver/guide) – He was very kind, professional and polite. Our first stop was to go Pinnawala elephant park so we could lot of elephants and later proceed to Sigiriya, where we have a 360 view of beautiful countryside-we took pictures and learnt about the King as well. We also visited the Dambulla cave temple and once again great photos and wonderful views. We had lunch at a restaurant overlooking jungle views – yummy and very affordable! The tour was excellent with something enjoyable every moment.

Our guide Mr Kusum was just so informative. He was very passionate about religion and we learnt a lot. I don’t think he would go into too much detail if you weren’t interested but we were so we got a lot of information which was amazing! We also visited the Temples and it was another humbling experience. We also ran through the beautiful countryside. The wildlife tour of minneriya which we actually really enjoyed! Our guide at the tea factory was once again so informative. We got to try the different flavours of tea that they produce as well!!

  24. imitiaz:

A marvellous insight of Sri Lanka, from antiquity to contemporary daily life. Our fantastic, professional driver/guide Silva was able to cover all aspects of his beloved country, knowledgeable, always readily available, his attention to us on the tour, the details of our travel and accommodation was exceptional. This tour was a delight for the palate with constant opportunities to experience the many varieties of ‘rice and curry’, not restricted to tourist restaurants. Silva was open to the flexibility of our preferences. Although we are ‘senior’ (61yrs), I found it fun and all physical aspects were quite manageable. I packed light, didn’t take or requite hiking boots as my sturdy walking sandals were perfect for this time of year (late Feb-early March). The climbs, cycling and hikes are paced for our enjoyment.

  25. Jacklyn:

This trip has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Journeying through Sri Lanka as a solo Traveller with seerendipity has been no less than amazing and I’m glad I did it. From hikes to Sigirya in Kandy and Ella Rock to swimming with wild sea turtles in Unawatuna, Sri Lanka holds a special place in my heart.

  26. Serena:

From the hills of Ella to the beaches at Unawatuna and even elephant spotting in Udawalawa, Sri Lanka has a lot to offer and this trip shows you all the best bits. Our guide Suraj was excellent. Nothing was too big or too small and he really accommodated us. If you want to see Sri Lanka this is the trip.

This was my first guided tour and am so happy I did it! Our tour guide really helped us to see and experience the local culture of Sri Lanka which we would’ve never been able to experience on our own. Overall, 10/10 trip 🙂

  41. Ingrid Johnston:

I believe our driver/guide was Gihan. he was very young and did not have experience being a tour guide. We drove most of the time without any information, With absolutely no talking to tell us about the neighbourhood we were driving through. The places that we visited were so very crowded and Loud that you could not hear what he was saying.

  42. Williamson:

If you want a deep immersion in Sri Lanka’s history, sights and cultural practices, this trip is a must. Gihan is an excellent driver/guide and he will open your eyes to the country in a unique and memorable way. He is very caring, very knowledgeable, disciplined and most importantly drives very carefully.

  43. L.Kaufmann:

We loved the entire trip and experience of mixing with Sri Lankan’s. We found the locals to be warm and friendly everywhere we went. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone that loves immersing themselves in the local culture and enjoy Sri Lankan curries and rotti’s.

Great driver/guide, Kusum, was really good and I really loved the trip. Good way to comfortably explore the main sights of Sri Lanka! Kusum was also really knowledgeable and could answer all questions posed

  47. edward Belcak:

The trip combined a wonderful combination of history, religion, culture, wildlife, nature and food. The driver/guide, Silva, was very informative. He drove very cautiously on the chaotic roads. Good hotels, food and a great itinerary.

  48. Chan hui:

In the beginning, we (me and my friend)were a bit hesitant to book this private trip because some Asian countries such as India, are not that much friendly for females. But Sri Lanka is an amazing country with very friendly people. We felt very safe throughout the trip and our guide Kusum was a very friendly and helpful young guy. He is very knowledgeable and very polite and very nice to his customers.

  49. shaik asim:

Amazing 11 days with a variety of activities, places and cultural experiences. Super professional guide/driver with first-class driving. I strongly recommend it.

  50. Neelan adesan:

A fantastic comfortable trip with dedicated luxury vehicle and guide, journey through a diverse and interesting country made all the more memorable by our inspiring guide Sam.

  51. Allam duggal:

Essential Sri Lanka is a great way to get to know this beautiful country and its friendly people. It packs in touring, cycling, trekking, trains across cities, villages, hill country and beaches. Just one warning – be prepared for the fact that your face will ache from smiling so much!

  52. Jenine Kolaprath:

Essential Sri Lanka covered a diverse section of the country, from ancient ruins, amazing cave paintings, tea plantations, beach, but the highlight for me was doing a safari into the National Park where we saw elephants, leopards, deer, jackal, crocodiles. The weather in December was a bit wet but we managed to cover all of the itinerary bar the first day of the hike which was mostly uphill & lots of steps, not relatively flat like the itinerary said.

  53. Abu:

A great oppertunity to explore this beatuiful Island with his great cultre, nature, facinating history and delicious local Food.

  54. Melanko shariff:

Excellent trip with a good mixture of culture, nature, good food and relaxing time at the beach. Our very knowledgable and caring guide Malan made this trip with his fun personality unforgetable. A great trip to get to know the different sites of the beautiful country Sri Lanka. Highly recommended!

  55. Snkpal purao:

Amazing trip to an incredible country, exceptionally led by Malan our private tour guide. Felt safe and well looked after at all times. Temples, tea plantations, treks and tasty, tasty food that you won’t forget in a hurry. Book now – you’re guaranteed a warm welcome by some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

  56. Abhijith:

I absolutely plan on writing a review of this trip, but think it is only fair to first give you the opportunity to right my complaints and issues with the trip. I noticed the trip is now about $150 USD cheaper even though December and January are getting into high season. . . This seems a far more fair price to pay for the experience and I ask that I be refunded this amount.

One of the best ways to explore Sri Lanka. Our guide thilan really knows a lot about his own country and is passionate to share his knowledge with us. And a good mix of activities

  62. Willhelm parker:

Definitely and highly recommend any one that wishes to explore Sri Lanka

  63. Lima ross:

One of my favourite trips. A lovely country with beautiful people. Loved the variety of destinations this trip covered. Never a dull moment with a great mix of activities.

  64. Ilheim pascal:

I felt this trip was poor value for money due to the locations we stayed in. I also felt the tour guide had been let down by misleading information in the trip notes which meant the group expected more from the Included activities. Having said that the tour guide was excellent and so enthusiastic about his country. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and I felt very safe there.

  65. Sanjay Mishra:

It was a good trip amazing luxury vehicle and a very knowledgeable private driver/guide. Gives you an incite to the life of an ordinary person. Loved the tea plantations and the walkthrough and the villages. Safari to see the elephants.

  68. Akshan Javed:

Great tour to get to know this fascinating destination. Our driver/guide Malan was very helpful and informative. The cultural triangle, hill country, wildlife and beaches is a must and we had a great time at Sigiriya – so lots of stalls and happy people. Beautiful beaches and had great views but shame we didn’t see it at sunset.

  69. Mary Diangco:

Great tour with many interesting and varied things to see along the way. Local food at the cooking class, ummmm very nice!

  70. Rimu Ali:

There were a lot of people everywhere we travelled, it took more than 3 hours in Sigiriya, which would not have lasts more than 1 hour if there was not a large concentration of tarvellers

  71. Avanish mehboob:

This tour is great if you’re in Sri Lanka, but can’t drive around on your own. Our driver/guide was brilliant and he took us to all the main sights, including viewpoints, wildlife parks, mountains, beaches and temples. The tour also included a visit to a Tea factory. It was a very comfortable private trip with a luxury modern car and personal driver/guide. More importantly, we bit the crowds in every single location, which was pretty great.

  72. Mebolo Rastogi:
