7 REMARKABLE ACTIVITIES TO EXPERIENCE IN GALLE FORT, SRI LANKA

1: EXPLORE THE “FORT WALK” AND GET A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE INSIDE GALLE FORT

There are several compelling reasons to embark on the renowned ‘Fort Walk’, but what captivated me the most was the awe-inspiring vista that awaits upon traversing the outer ramparts of the fort.

The elevated outer walls provide stunning panoramic vistas of the fort’s distinctive tangerine-colored roofs, captivating interior, the seemingly boundless Indian Ocean, and Galle’s renowned International Cricket Ground.

Thus, the 3-hour stroll starts at the esteemed Clock Tower and guides you through all the noteworthy sights within the fort, including the Galle Lighthouse, Old Dutch Hospital, Meeran Mosque, and the All Saints Church, among others.

If you share my intention to thoroughly investigate every part of the old Galle Fort, therefore, I strongly advise embarking on this remarkable walk either in the early morning or late afternoon.

2: VISIT AND APPRECIATE THE MAGNIFICENT GALLE FORT LIGHT HOUSE

For many years, Galle Fort has been a popular destination for travelers. However, with the recent viral fame of the renowned Galle Lighthouse on Instagram, its popularity has significantly increased.

Situated on the southern walls of the citadel, surrounded by palm trees, is the renowned Galle Lighthouse: a charming building with the sparkling Indian Ocean as its scenic background.

The British initially built the historical lighthouse in 1848, although the current structure is not the original formation of the lighthouse.

Due to unavoidable circumstances, the structure was engulfed in flames in 1936. However, it was subsequently repaired in 1939.

Presently, the Galle Lighthouse is unquestionably the most renowned and recognizable feature of the castle, making it an essential attraction to see within Galle Fort.

Galle Fort is abundant in stunning colonial architecture, and exploring its small, cobblestone streets is undoubtedly one of the top activities in Galle.

The defining characteristic of Galle Fort is the unique ambiance created by the dilapidated colonial structures, which sets it apart from other areas in Sri Lanka.

Galle Fort’s attractive and VOC-like character is defined by colonial architecture, which is why it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Notable landmarks inside Galle Fort include:

The Old Dutch Hospital, originally built as a medical facility, has been transformed into a vibrant hub for shopping and dining. The Dutch Hospital, constructed during the 17th century, stands as one of the most ancient structures within Galle Fort.

The Dutch Reformed Church is one of the most ancient Protestant churches in Sri Lanka, with a history reaching back to 1755. Without the strong fortifications, the church would have been destroyed by the powerful rampaging waves of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

The Meeran Mosque, located opposite the Galle lighthouse, is a captivating example of architecture that blends baroque, British Victorian, and Islamic elements. The construction of the building took place in 1904 with the purpose of catering to the Muslim minority residing in Galle.
