Full Description
Set out on a once-in-a-lifetime cultural journey through Sri Lanka's sacred Cultural Triangle for three days. Pay a visit to the rock fortress of Sigiriya as well as the historic cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. Take an off-road jeep safari to witness the massive gathering of wild elephants around Minneriya Lake.
Day 1: Colombo to Anuradhapura and Siriya
Your journey to hotel in Sigiriya will begin with a pickup from Colombo. You will be stopping at sacred temple in Mihintale, the Aukana Temple, and Sri Lanka's oldest city, Anuradhapura, on your way to Sigiriya. Anuradhapura, a historic city tour, is the first stop on the three-day itinerary.
Buddhist temples, dagobas, palaces, gardens, and other incredible city constructions that bear witness to the magnificence of ancient civilisation are among the many historical sites to be found in Anuradhapura. The eight holiest Buddhist landmarks in the city, or "Atamasthana," are also part of the Anuradha city tour. These include: Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Abhayagiri Dagaba, Jetavanarama, Mirisaveti Stupa, and Lankarama.
Day 2: Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa and back again.
Head off to the Sigiriya rock fortress, which boasts one of the world's oldest planted gardens, after breakfast. You may avoid the midday heat by starting your Sigiriya tour early in the morning. To get a good look at the royal palace, pool, and throne, you'll need to climb to the top of the rock. Relax and take in the stunning vistas from the peak. Stop by the Pidurangala temple later on.
Later, drive to Polonnaruwa and see the dozens of ancient temples, Buddha statues, and many other ancient structures built by ancient kings. Visit the Polonnaruwa Cultural Museum to see an audience hall, enormous stone-cut Buddha statues, dagobas, and much more.
After lunch, take an off-road jeep safari to witness the massive assembly at Minneriya Lake. Enhance your experience with a wildlife safari at Minneriya National Park. Expect to see wild animals such as leopards, elephants, bears, wild boars, buffalo, monkeys, and deer.
Day 3: Sigiriya, Kandy, and Colombo
Visiting a spice and herb garden on the way to Kandy, depart early for Colombo. Herbs and spices grown in Matale are an integral part of Sri Lankan cooking and medicine. While you and your guide visit the site, you will hear stories about its past.
Stop by the Tooth Relic Temple and Dambulla Golden Temple later on. Dambulla is home to a plethora of old murals and around 150 statues of Buddha. Continue the journey to Kandy City, your next destination.
Today, Kandy is one of Sri Lanka's most important cities because of the presence of the temple of the sacred tooth of the Buddha. Thousands of devotees visit this temple every day, making it the most popular Buddhist shrine on the island. Return to your hotel in Colombo.
