Insight Into Sri Lanka: A 11-Day Private Tour

An 11-day journey called "Insight into Sri Lanka" takes you to all the main tourist attractions in the country, including beaches on the west coast, wildlife parks in the southern part of the country, hill country, and historical sites in the cultural triangle. We've traveled to Sri Lanka, where we've boiled the leaves like the famous tea the nation produces and filtered out the best stuff. This 11-day vacation provides a glimpse of Sri Lanka, including strolling past barracuda at the Negombo Fish Market, looking for leopards and elephants in Yala, savoring a fiery curry in Ella, and lying flat on the beach in Unawatuna.

Start: Negombo, Sri Lanka

Finish: Colombo, Sri Lanka

Ages: min. 18

Group: Size Min. 1

Trip Type: Private

Why will you love this trip?

  • You can take the leisurely, personalized tour at your own speed.
  • Explore Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, home to monuments dating back thousands of years.
  • See elephants, bears, and leopards while taking a wildlife tour throughout Yala National Park in a 4WD vehicle. After that, unwind lakeside at peaceful Tissa.
  • Hiking amid the tea plantations, wooded areas, and mountains of Ella, a mountain resort.
  • Visit the amazing Negombo Fish Market to see sharks, squid, barracuda, and hundreds of other objects with fins that no one knows the names of.
  • Lunch in a verdant mountain village near Ella, where the curries are fiery and the Ceylon tea is steaming hot, reveals the advantages of doing so.
  • From Kandy to Ella, leave your face imprinted on the train window and gaze out with wide eyes—the panorama is like a six-hour movie.
  • You can solve practically every problem in life, even any lingering tightness in your finger when snapping photos, by spending two days (and nights) on Unawatuna's beautiful, palm-lined beaches.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Do your fingers still tingle in any way? Power is that, my friend! You are in control of this vacation because there aren't many inclusions, giving you lots of leeway to choose what you want to do.
  • The longest travel day is the train voyage from Kandy to Ella, which takes six hours. You will only want to get off this train, though, so you can charge your camera after what is essentially an extended, natural photo session.
  • Traveling from Ella to Tissa Lake can be excruciatingly slow because it winds down mountains to the coast. It also means that you will be able to take in the breathtaking view from all directions.
  • Only you and your associates participate in the trip; all transfers and sightseeing are private.
  • This 11-day tour covers a lot of ground. One of the most well-liked tours in Sri Lanka that we provide in our original style is ideal for people looking for a one-week vacation that they want to make the most of. Please take a look at our other tour itineraries if you're looking for a shorter or more relaxed trip to Sri Lanka.
  • It can get very hot in Sri Lanka throughout the summer. Although we try to conduct our walking tours and city visits in the early morning or late afternoon when the weather is milder, don't forget to stay hydrated and pack sun protection gear like a hat, sunscreen, a long-sleeve shirt and anything else that will shield you from the sun.
  • Traveling with Serendipity Tours includes honoring the customs and traditions of the places you visit. In this manner, you maximize the benefits of your encounters with locals and their settings. During this trip, we visit several temples, all of which need clothing that covers the wrists and below the knee. Sometimes entering a temple requires taking off your shoes and head coverings.

Yala/Bundala National Park: wildlife safari, guided village tour in Tissamaharama

Special Information
Yala National Park has seen a significant rise in visitors as a result of Sri Lanka's burgeoning tourism industry. Overtourism and a lack of sustainable management strategies have significantly impeded our decision to keep visiting Yala. We are testing visiting Block 5, a less visited area of Yala, to see if coming there will lessen our influence on the ecosystem and wildlife. Should we find that there are too many tourists at Block 5 to continue visiting in an ethical manner, we will alter our plans to include a visit to Udawalawe National Park, home to wild buffalo, elephants, sambar deer, and leopards.

We do a Jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park during September and October, when Yala National Park closes for annual infrastructure development and rejuvenation. Sambar deer, leopards, wild buffalo, and elephants all call Udawalawe home.

Day 8

Yala - Unawatuna

Travel to Unawatuna for about three and a half hours via private automobile heading west. There are lots of local eateries and cafes along this wonderful beach for relaxation. You will have lots of free time to explore Unawatuna and its surroundings today, as there are no included activities.

As an avid traveler my expectations were more than fulfilled.

  20. Nutan patel:

My husband and I had a Blast! Our Sri Lanka trip was amazing start to finish. We were picked up from the airport on our arrival By Chammy (our driver/guide) – He was very kind, professional and polite. Our first stop was to go Pinnawala elephant park so we could lot of elephants and later proceed to Sigiriya, where we have a 360 view of beautiful countryside-we took pictures and learnt about the King as well. We also visited the Dambulla cave temple and once again great photos and wonderful views. We had lunch at a restaurant overlooking jungle views – yummy and very affordable! The tour was excellent with something enjoyable every moment.

Our guide Mr Kusum was just so informative. He was very passionate about religion and we learnt a lot. I don’t think he would go into too much detail if you weren’t interested but we were so we got a lot of information which was amazing! We also visited the Temples and it was another humbling experience. We also ran through the beautiful countryside. The wildlife tour of minneriya which we actually really enjoyed! Our guide at the tea factory was once again so informative. We got to try the different flavours of tea that they produce as well!!

  21. imitiaz:

A marvellous insight of Sri Lanka, from antiquity to contemporary daily life. Our fantastic, professional driver/guide Silva was able to cover all aspects of his beloved country, knowledgeable, always readily available, his attention to us on the tour, the details of our travel and accommodation was exceptional. This tour was a delight for the palate with constant opportunities to experience the many varieties of ‘rice and curry’, not restricted to tourist restaurants. Silva was open to the flexibility of our preferences. Although we are ‘senior’ (61yrs), I found it fun and all physical aspects were quite manageable. I packed light, didn’t take or requite hiking boots as my sturdy walking sandals were perfect for this time of year (late Feb-early March). The climbs, cycling and hikes are paced for our enjoyment.

  22. Jacklyn:

  38. Ingrid Johnston:

I believe our driver/guide was Gihan. he was very young and did not have experience being a tour guide. We drove most of the time without any information, With absolutely no talking to tell us about the neighbourhood we were driving through. The places that we visited were so very crowded and Loud that you could not hear what he was saying.

  39. Williamson:

If you want a deep immersion in Sri Lanka’s history, sights and cultural practices, this trip is a must. Gihan is an excellent driver/guide and he will open your eyes to the country in a unique and memorable way. The trip combined a wonderful combination of history, religion, culture, wildlife, nature and food. The driver/guide, Silva, was very informative. He drove very cautiously on the chaotic roads. Good hotels, food and a great itinerary.

  45. Chan hui:

In the beginning, we (me and my friend)were a bit hesitant to book this private trip because some Asian countries such as India, are not that much friendly for females. Essential Sri Lanka covered a diverse section of the country, from ancient ruins, amazing cave paintings, tea plantations, beach, but the highlight for me was doing a safari into the National Park where we saw elephants, leopards, deer, jackal, crocodiles. The weather in December was a bit wet but we managed to cover all of the itinerary bar the first day of the hike which was mostly uphill & lots of steps, not relatively flat like the itinerary said.

  51. Melanko shariff:

Excellent trip with a good mixture of culture, nature, good food and relaxing time at the beach. Our very knowledgable and caring guide Malan made this trip with his fun personality unforgetable. A great trip to get to know the different sites of the beautiful country Sri Lanka. Highly recommended!

Amazing trip to an incredible country, exceptionally led by Malan our private tour guide. Felt safe and well looked after at all times. Temples, tea plantations, treks and tasty, tasty food that you won’t forget in a hurry. Book now – you’re guaranteed a warm welcome by some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

  53. Abhijith:

I absolutely plan on writing a review of this trip, but think it is only fair to first give you the opportunity to right my complaints and issues with the trip. I noticed the trip is now about $150 USD cheaper even though December and January are getting into high season. . . This seems a far more fair price to pay for the experience and I ask that I be refunded this amount.

Very good organized trip in beautiful Sri Lanka. 11 days were perfect with 2 times the same hotel for 2 nights. Comfortable hotels and modern car with a skillful, pleasant guide.

  56. Ilheim pascal:

I felt this trip was poor value for money due to the locations we stayed in. I also felt the tour guide had been let down by misleading information in the trip notes which meant the group expected more from the Included activities. Having said that the tour guide was excellent and so enthusiastic about his country. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and I felt very safe there.

  57. Lenardo:

If you like sunshine, palm trees, elephant safaris, leopard spotting, coconuts, beaches, hiking, friendly people, monkeys, culture and tea, go to Sri lanka! Great tour to get to know this fascinating destination. Our driver/guide Malan was very helpful and informative. The cultural triangle, hill country, wildlife and beaches is a must and we had a great time at Sigiriya – so lots of stalls and happy people. Beautiful beaches and had great views but shame we didn’t see it at sunset.

  68. Mary Diangco:

Great tour with many interesting and varied things to see along the way. Local food at the cooking class, ummmm very nice!

  69. Rimu Ali:

There were a lot of people everywhere we travelled, it took more than 3 hours in Sigiriya, which would not have lasts more than 1 hour if there was not a large concentration of tarvellers

  70. Avanish mehboob:

This tour is great if you’re in Sri Lanka, but can’t drive around on your own. Our driver/guide was brilliant and he took us to all the main sights, including viewpoints, wildlife parks, mountains, beaches and temples. The tour also included a visit to a Tea factory. It was a very comfortable private trip with a luxury modern car and personal driver/guide. More importantly, we bit the crowds in every single location, which was pretty great.

  71. Mebolo Rastogi:

  79. Melina haufmann:

What an excellent Sri Lanka 11 days it was!! From being picked up exactly on time to being dropped off back at the airport we had one of the most amazing trips. Our tour guide, Silva, was so very matured and experienced guy, he was enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. The drove very carefully and we felt very safe on Sri Lana roads with him. At one of our stops it was raining, so the itinerary was swapped so that we did not have to get wet. This was very thoughtful and it worked out well. We got to see everything AND stay dry:- The sights we saw were breath-taking. For example, when you walk up the stairs to Sigiriya and turn around and see the view … it is amazing. Ending the trip with relaxing on the beach is such a great idea. An ice cold local cocktail is exactly what we felt like after the heat of the tour. We would DEFINITELY recommend this to anyone who wants to see the hot spots of Sri Lanka and learn about their traditions. The constant supply of water, and bracelet souvenir were an excellent touch. Thank you for an awesome experience.
