Sri Lanka Southern Tour With Whale Watching (Private Tour)

See the world’s largest mammal in its natural habitat as it rises up for air and wags its tail about. Yes, the whale-watching trip with Galle will make your trip to the south coast of Sri Lanka all the more memorable.

This Sri Lankan southern tour includes a 4 to 6-hour morning whale watching tour as well as Galle Fort, Mask Museum, Madu River Estuary, and many other interesting places along the south coast beach.

On your journey to Mirissa, explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle and take a self-guided walking tour through the labyrinthine cobbled streets in the fort. Also visit the Mask Museum, Madu River Estuaries, and the Sea Turtle Conservation Center.

On day 2, after reaching the Mirissa harbor, hop aboard the 15-meter boat and meet your experienced skipper and the staff on board. Wear your life vests, and you will be set to sail.

As we continue to sail the Indian Ocean, have a light continental breakfast served with your preference of tea or coffee. Once we reach whale-frequented areas, keep an eye out for whale species like the blue whale, humpback, sperm whales, etc. You can capture their graceful movements, so don’t forget to bring a camera. You might even stand the chance to see dolphins, whale sharks, and sea turtles.

You can enjoy a worry-free trip because the boat is fitted and equipped with all the safety equipment. Don’t pass up the chance to relax in the pleasant sea breeze as you admire the breathtaking seascapes and their gigantic and tiny creatures with the Galle whale-watching tour.

Itineraries

Day 1

COLOMBO/ MIRISSA

Meet & greet by “Serendipity Tours” representatives and proceed to the hotel in Mirissa, en route visits,

BENTOTA

Bentota Beach is the most popular beach holiday destination on the island. The unique location of Bentota Beach Resort is one important reason for its popularity as a beach holiday destination. Bentota Resort is located on an island, and the island is connected with the mainland at its southern border. Bentota is mainly comprised of the narrow strip of land that spreads along the north-south axis. Unlike most other islands, Bentota is surrounded by both the sea and a river. One side of the island is the Bentota River, while the western side of Bentota is flanked by the Indian Ocean. Large numbers of hotels are built in this narrow strip of land, enabling the travelers to have a peaceful atmosphere during the holiday. You can book a hotel in Bentota through Serendipity Tours at a very affordable rate online.

TURTLE HATCHERY

Projects have been launched to conserve the population of turtles that are reaching extinction, and such projects are found along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The turtle digs a hole on the beach, lays her eggs and covers it with sand where it is supposed to incubate by the heat of the sun. What often happens is that the eggs are dug out by fishermen and sold to people who consume them.

But now the eggs are bought up by the conservation projects and are hatched the natural way in enclosed areas where the birds don’t have a chance of picking them up, and the babies are let into the sea after two days at night, which offers them a better chance of survival.

SPICE GARDEN

Visit a spice garden at Matale where spices and herbs used for Sri Lankan cuisine and medication are grown. Spices of Sri Lanka attracted the early seafaring merchants who made the long voyages to purchase this precious merchandise.

GALLE

The ancient port city of Galle has a history that stretches back hundreds of years. According to Sir James Tenant, Galle was the "Tarshish,” referred to in the Bible as the port where ships trading with King Solomon obtained gemstones, ivory, spices and scented woods. Most certainly, the place where the Galle Fort now stands, as well as other areas in Galle, all had historic connections that go back long before the Portuguese era. International traders, Persians, moor traders from the Persian Gulf, south Indian traders, Malay and a host of other nationalities lived and traded in Galle.

STAR FORT MATARA

Star Fort and the Dutch Fort are the most prominent colonial constructions in Matara. Both are located near the city center and only ten minutes' walk away. Star Fort houses the archaeological museum with a large collection of valuable artifacts. As the name suggests, Star Fort takes the shape of a star and is surrounded by a ditch and a huge wall.

Overnight stay in Matara

  4. Marian:

We did a whale watching tour with Seerendipity and we started the trip from Colombo. It was a perfect trip and very interesting, however, early morning pick up at 04.00 am from our hotel was not the perfect time to wakeup. Seerendipity tours was recommended from friends that visited many years ago. Whole process from booking the trip to payment was very simple and easy. We did everything through the WhatsApp.
We were very lucky to spot 5 blue whales, another type of whale and many dolphins as well as few sea turtles. The crew was super and very helpful for the passengers, especially the travelers who were sea sick. It seems the crew have a very good experience handling groups, who are going on whale watching trip. Galle fort, south coast beach, Hikkaduwa, Sea turtles and herbal garden all are very interesting, highly Recommended!

  5. Peter Mass:

We could see 2 whales (mother and a baby) just after a few minutes boat trip from the shore, I never thought it was so easy to spot whales

  6. Carolina:

Our whale watching trip was postponed for 2 consecutive days due to the rough weather. At last we were able to take the trip today as the weather turn to normal. We took the trip with great hopes to see few blue whales., We had good luck from the start to the end and we were able to see 5 blue whales along with many dolphin and 1 sea turtle.

  7. Sabine:

It was a nice trip to south coast. lot to see and do on the trip and therefore the trip should have been at least 2 days. Will definitely take the trip again with some additional time. Our guide Shantha did a geat job and was highly satisfied with his service.

  8. Rickie:

It was a nice trip with Amara. everything was perfect and well organized.

We travelled more than 3 hours in a big boat with a bunch of other tourists to see a whale.

  11. Gilmo bass:

This is the first time I did a whale watching rip what a brilliant experience, I never thought I could see a whale so closely

  12. Gisela Kraus:

I never thought that mirissa such a nice place to spot whales. Very friendly staff. They arevdoing their best to see the whale watching. Very good staff and good leadership from Geeth.

  13. Gigen:

The boat crew was extremely friendly. They ensured we weren’t cheated by incorrect amount, and sounded very genuine. So we decided to go and watch the whales with them. the crew made sure we reahced the harbour at 6.30, by continuous calls and updating us on the routes. It started off with black tea and then followed by breakfast on the boat. We drove 30 min into the ocean and got the chance to see some dolphins. After various efforts we spotted 2 blue whales, and the sight was just mind boggling. After 2.5 hours in the sea we decided to head back to the harbour, while providing us with some fresh watermelons. Good trip and I should say this was the cracker of our vacation. Thanks Seerendipity!!

  14. Johnson:

Good boat, good crew and good food. Crew takes every effort locate whales. We saw a few and three of them together. Great effort and thank you. the crew make sure that the whales are not disturbed. Highly recommend a whale watching trip with seerendipity. Be prepared to come to your hotel late evening there is much more to see on this trip.

  15. Gihan ganhewa:

We wanted to see only whales and did not do any other acitivity as we have already have done them in early ocations. The whale watching tour was good.

  16. Brandon:

Excellent Sri Lanka south coast tour with whale watching. very friendly and knowledgeable staff and they served a delicious breakfast onboard. It was bit deficult to book the trip and we had to postpone the trip for few times due to teh lack of a crowd to go to the see. Atlast we got the opportunity and it was an excellent trip. Apart from the whale watching we had the opportunity to see nice beaches in Hikkaduwa, mirissa as well as to see Galle Fort. Highly recommended .!

  17. Illham:

Excellent whale watching tour, very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Highly recommended .!

  18. Josephine Udaippa:

We had a very nice and helpful crew. The whale watching vesel was largely empty and it was bit deficult to spot whales. However, our crew managed to locate a few whales and few of us on the boat was lucky to have a close look into them.

They good experience and is very knowledgeable in regards to whales. We left the harbor about 7am and we came in at about 10:30am. It was a 3.5hr tour.

On the tour wr got tea and a plate of breakfast. It certainly was a great way to start the tour.

Well worth your money. A definite must if you are in mirissa.

  19. Jarina Hanisov:

We had great whale watching with Seerendipity! They had a new comfortable boat since and it was very safe too, friendly crew gave us lot of information about whales. Highly recommended! hotel pickup was on time (though it was a bit early) and many activities in southern Sri Lanka.

  20. Shaibani Mehta:

The staff was very friendly and very good at their job. They try very hard to locate the whales and show it us. I feel there should be a bit of luck to see whales on this trip. Because it can be difficult to spot whales in this vast span of waters.

The best part is, the tour not only includes whale watching but also many places in southern Sri Lanka. It was a bonus. WE enjoyed the beautiful scenery on the south and enjoyed beautiful beaches.

Galle fort was really a highlight and we spent nearly 2 hours in the fort.

  21. Hatem:

Don’t expect to see the whale 🐳 all days and very close to your boat. The course guard is keeping an eye on the whale watching vessels and boats must keep a healthy distance from the creatures…We saw few whales from the distance, lot of dolphins, sea turtles as well.

  22. Romesh:

Mirissa never thought it was such a nice place to spot whales. Very friendly staff. They arevdoing their best to see the whale watching. Very good staff and good leadership from Geeth.

  23. Brenda fernandez:

It was a very nice trip. Other than than the whale watching tour we had the opportunity to see many attractions in southern Sri Lanak like Galle Fort.

  24. Rbiga C:

Fantastic experience and the crew were all fantastic when I was feeling a bit of sea sick, would definitely recommend

  25. Michael:

VI expected more information about the whales we were trying to find. Once we located a whale, we raced full throttle to see it, along with the 16 other boats in the area. Whale chasing as opposed to watching. Breakfast on the boat was nice. 80% of the passengers on board were throwing up into small plastic bags provided. Vomit central. Saw a few whales then back to shore

  26. Robin:

Excellent trip, enthusiastic crew, started at 7 and by 8 we saw the first of many whales. Calm sea. Recommended.

  27. Kedriwala:

It’s so polluting. Some 100 ships go into habitat of these animals and spreads so much oil. One can smell oil all over the place. Going to the place itself is bad experience as half of the people in the boat starts puking. For the sight of few seconds it’s not worth to hamper natural habitat of these animals. And also it’s not necessary that all the boats will sight a whale. Go for snorkeling you will see better fishes and turtle and it won’t harm them. I regretted going there and so I recommend not to do so to my friends and family. Please think about it it’s very harmful for those animals

  28. Mehta Abu:

Knowledgeable/good guides and also the most respectful to the whales compared to the other boats watching – big plus for us.

  29. Rema alli:

Noice program with many important attractions with whale watching and relaxing on the southern beach

  30. pulkit mehta:

Nice relaxing program, we had plenty of time to enjoy the places that we visited on the way

  31. Brenda:

Large number of places to visit on day 1, boat trip at Madu river estuary was the most important highlight for me on the day on day 1 we had plenty of time to enjoy the pristine beaches.

  32. Naveen Pillai:

Simply fantastic experience. Great hospitality. Value for money. Best for families too. Fully satisfied. Worth seeing the whale watch through them.
